Job Title: Telecom Engineer Department : Information Technology
Location : [Mesquite ISD], [Mesquite, TX]
Reports To : IT Director or Telecom Manager
Rate: $35/hr Job Summary: The Telecom Engineer is responsible for overseeing, maintaining, and enhancing the school district's telecommunications systems, with a focus on
VOIP technologies,
Avaya systems, and
911 infrastructure . This position ensures that all communication systems are reliable, efficient, and aligned with the district's operational needs, supporting both daily educational activities and emergency response protocols.
Key Responsibilities: - VOIP Systems Management :
- Administer, configure, and maintain the district's VOIP phone systems.
- Provide troubleshooting and resolution for VOIP-related issues, ensuring minimal downtime for staff and faculty.
- Collaborate with network teams to ensure seamless integration between VOIP systems and network infrastructure.
- Monitor VOIP call quality and system performance, making adjustments as necessary.
- Avaya Systems :
- Maintain and troubleshoot Avaya telephony systems, including hardware and software components.
- Configure new Avaya devices (phones, call centers, etc.) and ensure they are properly integrated into the system.
- Manage user accounts, call routing, voicemail systems, and other Avaya features.
- Ensure the Avaya system meets the communication needs of the district, including scalability for future needs.
- 911 Infrastructure :
- Oversee the 911emergency communication system, ensuring proper routing and functionality for emergency calls within the district.
- Work with local authorities and service providers to maintain compliance with all relevant 911 regulations and standards.
- Perform regular testing and maintenance to ensure reliable 911 services are always available, and resolve issues promptly when they arise.
- Telecom Infrastructure Management :
- Maintain and upgrade telecom infrastructure, including wiring, switches, and equipment across district buildings.
- Ensure all hardware is up to date and functioning properly, including patch panels, routers, and physical lines.
- Work with contractors and vendors to implement new infrastructure projects or repairs.
- System Monitoring & Troubleshooting :
- Proactively monitor telecom systems for potential issues and performance bottlenecks.
- Troubleshoot and resolve telecom-related issues in a timely manner, including phone systems, network connectivity, and emergency communication systems.
- Provide technical support to district staff for telecom-related inquiries and problems.
- Documentation & Reporting :
- Maintain accurate records of telecom systems, including configurations, maintenance schedules, and service tickets.
- Provide regular reports on telecom system performance, issues, and upgrades to district leadership.
- Document processes and procedures for internal use and training purposes.
Skills & Qualifications: - Experience :
- Proven experience working with VOIP systems, including system configuration, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
- Hands-on experience with Avaya telephony systems, including installation, administration, and support.
- Knowledge of 911emergency call routing systems and infrastructure, including compliance with local and federal regulations.
- Strong background in maintaining and upgrading telecom infrastructure.
- Technical Skills :
- Strong understanding of telecom technologies, including VOIP , Avaya , and 911 systems.
- Familiarity with telecom network infrastructure, including data cabling, routers, switches, and security protocols.
- Ability to work with network teams to ensure telecom systems are integrated into the overall IT infrastructure.
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve telecom hardware and software issues efficiently.
- Certifications (Preferred):
- Avaya Certified (or equivalent telephony certifications).
- Certifications in networking or telecommunications , such as CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, etc.
- 911-related training or certifications.
- Communication Skills :
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to work with district staff, leadership, and vendors.
- Ability to explain complex technical issues to non-technical staff in an understandable way.
Education: - Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Telecommunications, or related field preferred, or equivalent practical experience.
