Based in Austin Texas, CARMAhealth was founded in 2017 by Dr. Carlos Tirado as an integrated primary care and behavioral health practice focused on providing in-network access to people suffering from addiction and co-occurring psychiatric conditions. Over the past 7 years, CARMAhealth has expanded into three states (Texas, Florida and Virginia) providing in-person and telemedicine behavioral health and primary care services for various treatment facilities, hospitals, and state-funded agencies in addition to outpatient medication management, ketamine and TMS services. We are seeking a Physician Assistant (PA) to join our team in Austin, TX. We are searching for both FT and PT roles and these can be W2 or Contract roles depending on role and your situation.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Physician Assistant (PA) to join our team, specializing in Primary Care and withdrawal management . The PA will work under the supervision of a licensed physician to provide comprehensive medical care for individuals experiencing substance use disorders (SUD) and withdrawal symptoms. The ideal candidate will have experience in detox protocols, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), and managing medical conditions in patients on a withdrawal management unit .

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct history and physical, daily rounds and medical management in person on a withdrawal management unit.
  • Develop and implement individualized detoxification protocols for alcohol, opioids, benzodiazepines, and other substances.
  • Manage medications for withdrawal symptoms , including buprenorphine, benzodiazepines and supportive medications .
  • Coordinate care with nursing and support staff on premises.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests , including lab work, toxicology screenings, and metabolic panels.
  • Assess and treat uncomplicated medical complications related to substance withdrawal .
  • Provide patient education on withdrawal symptoms, MAT options, relapse prevention, and long-term recovery strategies.
  • Work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team , including physicians, nurses, therapists, and case managers, to ensure holistic patient care.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic medical records (EMR) and adhere to HIPAA and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations related to withdrawal management and MAT.
  • Stay updated on evidence-based practices for withdrawal management and withdrawal management through continuing education.

Qualifications:

  • Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) from an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program .
  • Active PA state licensure in the State of Texas.
  • Experience in withdrawal management and substance use disorders preferred but not required .
  • Active DEA license.
  • Knowledge of withdrawal management protocols, addiction pharmacology, and MAT guidelines .
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work with patients in distress.
  • Ability to manage urgent/emergent situations , such as medical emergencies and crisis interventions.
  • Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR/EMR) and telehealth platforms.

Work Schedule & Environment:

  • Full-time or part-time positions available.
  • Work settings may include detox facilities, inpatient or outpatient substance abuse programs, or telehealth services .
  • Practitioner will primarily work on site
