In the 1850’s, the founder of St. Paul’s School, Dr. George Shattuck, deeply believed that children were best educated by being deeply immersed in the beauty, spirit, and experience of the natural world. Almost 170 years later, we want to integrate an understanding of ecology and natural systems into the “new basics” of a St. Paul’s education. Bringing Dr. Shattuck’s vision forward, we want students out on the water, the trails, and the climbing opportunities, away from phones and screens and focusing on physical activity, teamwork and collaboration, leadership and fun. The Director of Outdoor Education and Programming will reinforce what we are doing in the chapel and classrooms, in terms of experiential education and community life/teambuilding/leadership, by developing and implementing a robust and fun outdoor education/experiential education program.
RESPONSIBILITIES : The Director of Outdoor Education and Programming will work closely with the Director of Athletics to develop and implement an outdoor education and expedition program. The Director of Outdoor Education will partner with the Vice Rector for School Life to explore ways in which outdoor programs can be used in support of leadership development. In addition to leading the Outdoor Education program, the candidate will teach in one of our academic departments and be responsible for a variety of activities typical to the boarding school environment, including advising, dormitory association, at least two seasons of co-curricular engagement, committee work and other duties.
Specific duties include but are not limited to:
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
Education : Bachelor’s degree, preferably with advanced degree in fields associated with outdoors, expedition, and environmental education.
Experience : The successful candidate should have 5-10 years teaching experience, with leadership and program development experience preferred. They will have conducted successful expedition-style trips and be able to work collaboratively across the School’s offices to coordinate and implement trips during school breaks. They will also be appropriately certified (e.g., Wilderness First Responder; CDL; CPR). As this position is a faculty position, the successful candidate will have experience advising students and working with parents.
Salary: Competitive, based on experience.
Candidates should submit a cover letter and resume with their online application.
